Quartz engineered stone is a composite material comprising quartz and resin. It is used primarily for kitchen and vanity tops but it can have other applications as long it is indoor. Unlike marble and granite the material is factory made in slabs, cut and polished by fabricators.
Engineered stone products are gaining in popularity and are sometimes preferred over granite products, because it’s light and uniform colour and, compared to unsealed granite, has better resistance to stains. However, recent research reported in Consumer Reports magazine reveals virtually no difference in performance between quartz products and sealed granite. Engineered stone is commonly referred to as quartz surface, though it is possible to created engineered stone from materials other than quartz, if marble is used the engineered stone will be less resistance to stains.
